Just finished reading a great book

golden_mean_book_annabel_lyon The Golden Mean, written by Annabel Lyon takes you through the brilliant mind of Aristotle as he teaches his most of famous pupils, Alexander the Great. I really have to recommend this book, it was a bestseller for a reason. The talent of Annabel’s beautiful writing really shows in this novel. I thought perhaps going into it that the life of a philosopher couldn’t possibly be so entertaining, but I proved myself wrong. Not being able to drop this book until it was done, infact the day it came in the mail, I did not bookmark until it I was to tired to go on.

This novel, will be my last read on a book. I’ve now completely made the switch to eReader’s and it was definitely a good decision. Im enjoying my Sony Reader already, with all the books I intend to read have already been put on it, I should have a review on it soon! Although I should say, I am glad I have this one in hardcover. Great books like this deserve to be proudly kept on my bookshelf.

eReaders need to find some common ground

ebooks-300x288

As eReader’s brand, so do their specific format file. But this causes the problem of not being able to read all the books you want to buy across different eReader’s. Sony not about to read Kindle files and Kindle not being able to read Sony’s we really decrease the amount of books we are limited to. Essentially is the same for game consoles, for the sole purpose of competing for sales. But is this in the authors best interest? Wouldn’t the author, instead, want to make his or her eBooks globally available to all eReaders? You would think you could say, “hey Apple solved this buy fully supporting the ePub format!”. At what I would reply with “Wrong”.

As Steve Jobs noted when he introduced the iPad, iBooks is supporting the EPUB format. What he didn’t say, though, was that Apple plans to use its own DRM software to wrap around its books, not Adobe’s. In short means you wont be able to use the eBooks you read (even though they are in ePub format) that you bought from barnes and noble and other bookstores, and looks like you can only use the ones purchased through the iBook app. And because of this, it has also made reading the books you buy from the iBook app, impossible to read on any other device not owned by apple. A big fail? I think so.

If the iBook store becomes a top competitor for eBook sales, that would mean two of the largest eBook stores selling books incompatible with each other, That just sounds remarkably dumb. If I buy a book, I want to be able to read it when I want to and on what ever I want, don’t limit me to the eReader you sell, if you can make book sales then make them!

Edit: I added a RSS feed, you can use any of the buttons on the sidebar to the right to subscribe.

Is the iPad worth it for the every day reader?

aaaple_00000 In short, I would have to say no. Unless of course you love the thought of burning a $499 hole in your pocket. This isn’t a specifically aimed at Reader device, and the functionality (of what I’ve seen) for a price tag that large, isn’t very impressive at all. Basically its an iPod touch with a larger screen and web browsing experience that supposedly makes that $499 price tag say, hey I’m worth it. But unless you would consider yourself an Apple fanatic I really cant say this device is for you. But even with its “great web browsing functionality” this tablet along with everything else apple, DOESNT SUPPORT FLASH! How can you create something designed specifically to be used for browsing the internet and not ad flash? For those of you that don’t know what flash is, its pretty much everything great about the internet (Games among other things all use flash when they are browser based) and if you still don’t know what I mean go to miniclip.com all of those games use flash.

This isn’t something you would buy to read your favorite eBooks on, simply because there’s allot better options for a couple hundred bucks cheaper. So if your looking for a eReader, do just that and buy an eReader!

Congress wants eReader for schools

Rep. Edward Markey has submitted a new bill that would update the Federal Communication’s Commissions E-Rate program. This program subsidizes computer equipment and internet connectivity for schools. So, in short, the passing of this bill would hook up low income housed kids with their own eReader. I wonder which one it would be?

I think this is a great idea, but it does have its flaws: For instance, eReader’s aren’t the most durable things, and kids aren’t exactly anti-clumsy either. However, I do believe that if more kids had these types of electronics it would significantly improve the percentage of children who actually read books. I do believe eReader’s are a more personal electronic and schools already have libraries, but this would effectively eliminate paper waste, although, a lost book would now be $250… so let’s hope they’re not as unorganized as I was when I was in elementary school.

So what do you think? Waste of money, or a plan you believe in? Post your thoughts in the comments section. If this is something you agree with, what kind of eReader would you choose to populate our schools? I personally would go with the Sony PRS-300 because of its small pocket fitting design, and quality build for those clumsy kids!
